Feeding by the cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis on the microplankton assemblage in the Oyashio region during spring

چکیده
Onboard incubation experiments were conducted to examine the feeding rates and selectivity of the cyclopoid copepod Oithona similis on natural assemblages of microplankton during the spring bloom in the Oyashio region. O. similis cleared ciliates at higher rates (2.8–11.9 mL copepod 1 d ) than dinoflagellates (1.4 mL copepod 1 d ), with no detectable ingestion of diatoms. Clearance increased with ciliate size, reaching maximum rates at a size of 35 mm equivalent spherical diameter. The total ingestion rates of protozooplankton (ciliates and dinoflagellates) by O. similis ranged between 24.8 and 41.5 ngC copepod 1 d , which exceeded by about 2–3 times the metabolic expenditure of the copepod. Applying the ingestion rates to abundance data of O. similis, we estimated that the copepod population removed each day 0.1–0.4% of the protozooplankton standing stock. These results indicate that protozooplankton, especially aloricate ciliates, are an important food resource available to O. similis even under bloom conditions in the Oyashio region, though the predation by the copepod did not have a significant impact on protozooplankton assemblages.

Study on population growth and production of cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops trajani fed on different diets
In this study the effects of different algal and nonalgal diets on density and population growth rate of cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops trajani were studied. To this intention, the copepod were mass cultured in 120 liter tanks by feeding on different diets (5 treatments, 3 replicate in each one) including fresh composition of microalgae: Scenedesmus obliquus and Spirulina maxima (LSS), dried ...
متن کاملOn the uncertainty beneath the name Oithona similis Claus, 1866 (Copepoda, Cyclopoida)
The marine cyclopoid Oithona similis sensu lato Claus, 1866, is considered to be one of the most abundant and ubiquitous copepods in the world. However, its minimal original diagnosis and the unclear connection with its (subjective) senior synonym Oithona helgolandica Claus, 1863, may have caused frequent misidentification of the species. Consequently, it seems possible that several closely rel...
متن کاملFeeding rates and prey : predator size ratios of the nauplii and adult females of the marine cyclopoid copepod Oithona davisae
We studied the feeding behavior of the nauplii and adult females of the marine cyclopoid copepod Oithona davisae in the laboratory. Functional response experiments showed that O. davisae can feed on a broad size range of prey but that high clearance rates only occur in a narrow prey size range. Neither the nauplii nor the females were able to feed on Nannochloropsis oculata (2.5 mm), but . 4 mm...
متن کاملCoprorhexy, coprophagy, and coprochaly in the copepods Calanus helgolandicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus, and Oithona similis
Studies of fecal pellet flux show that a large percentage of pellets produced in the upper ocean is degraded within the surface waters. It is therefore important to investigate these degradation mechanisms to understand the role of fecal pellets in the oceanic carbon cycle. Degradation of pellets is mainly thought to be caused by coprophagy (ingestion of fecal pellets) by copepods, and especial...
متن کاملTemperature affects respiration rate of Oithona similis
Oithona spp. is considered the most abundant and ubiquitous copepod genus in the marine environment, often outnumbering calanoid copepods throughout the year. Previous studies have argued that one of the reasons for such success is that the respiration rate of Oithona spp. is insensitive to temperature changes and lower than in calanoids. However, comprehensive data on the thermal biology of th...
